Gibraltarvallen represents a new chapter in Gothenburg's urban development, where long-term commitment and engagement form the foundation for sustainable living. By constructing the city’s first multi-family residential building in solid timber, we take conscious responsibility for future generations and significantly reduce the carbon footprint compared to traditional construction methods.
At the heart of the project is a robust cross-laminated timber structure which, combined with resource-efficient design, minimises both energy demand and future maintenance requirements. By merging common sense with rational material choices, we create the foundations for architecture that is beautiful, functional, and ecologically defensible over time.
The architecture draws inspiration from the site's unique character and harmonises with the orderly functionalist buildings of the surrounding area.
The project consists of two distinct building volumes that follow the slope of the street, meeting the city with different expressions. One wing has a light and almost transparent character with a pale green façade, while the other appears as a sculptural volume clad in charred black timber panels. Inside the buildings, residents are greeted by a warm atmosphere where the beautiful timber structure is left visible in stairwells and entrances, creating a clear identity and a tangible presence of natural materials in daily life.
Living quality is paramount, with apartments characterised by generous natural light and flexible floor plans that can be adapted as needs change over time. By integrating smart energy systems such as solar panels and geothermal heating, we create a resource-efficient home where individual metering encourages conscious consumption.
However, sustainability at Gibraltarvallen is not just technology; it is about enabling a simple and social everyday life. Through shared spaces such as a lush inner courtyard, centrally located laundry rooms and excellent provisions for sustainable transport, we create an environment where neighbours can meet and grow together in a secure and inspiring community.
