Business Gate

As part of the urban development along the Göta Älv river in Gothenburg, the client and the city requested that the Global Business Gate project contribute to the creation of a vibrant, mixed-use neighbourhood and stand out as an architectural landmark in Masthuggskajen, a former industrial harbour and shipping district.

Global Business Gate will be a hub and meeting place for companies operating in international trade and business. It is composed of a twenty-four-storey office tower and an annex building of twelve storeys, totalling 33,000 sqm.
ThamVidegård proposed a building that, through its rounded shape, could use the triangular plot efficiently and create a recognisable architectural form from all viewpoints around the city. The project seeks to build on the historical global trading activities that shaped this part of Gothenburg and contributed greatly to the development of the city over the last three centuries. Through its height and position in the cityscape, the GBG tower will stand out as a new point of reference along the Göta Älv river.
Inside the building, there will be a mix of co-working spaces, smaller offices for start-ups, and dedicated spaces for more established businesses. The plinth volume will be used for a common reception area, restaurants, cafés, pop-up stores, conference rooms, and a large event and exhibition space. At the top of the tower is an observation deck offering views all the way to the Vinga Fyr lighthouse in the Kattegat sea. The façades are clad with curved panels of etched glass and galvanised steel—materials that can withstand Gothenburg's coastal climate.
