Across the street from Stockholm Central station, the Orgelpipan 7 building originally completed in 1964 forms an entire city block at one of the cities’ most central street crossings. The competition brief called for a complete refurbishment of the building as well as an extension above the existing roof line.

One starting point for the proposal was the palace typology with numerous examples in Stockholm: a single building that fills out a whole block, succeeds in supporting city life on the four surrounding streets and stands out as a rather grand and monumental point of reference within its urban context.

With some adjustments to proportion of the facades at street level and the addition of a new four storeys atrium along Mäster Samuelsgatan as well as a new two+two storeys volume centered on the roof, a new solid composition is shaped. The existing ceramic stone facade is technically obsolete and will be replaced by limestone combined with bronze metal frames for entrance doors, shop windows and canopies. When completed the new Orgelpipan 7 building will constitute an urban cornerstone fitting with the scale and quality of its surroundings, the most vibrant core of the city.
